Without our monthly adoption event at Pet Supplies Plus at 3340 Sheridan Drive in Amherst, we would not be able to save as many dogs and cats as we do. Since we don't operate a shelter, we have no way of allowing the general public to view our adoptable pets. Having an adoption event allows you to come and see our friendly tails and paws and help you make the right decision when searching for your new furry friend.

When shopping for your new family member, please show your support to the store managers, Mike or Rich, by purchasing your items for your new pet from their store in Amherst, where we hold our adoption events. By doing so, you will be helping us to continue to hold our adoption events there and save many more dogs and cats in the process. Say hello to the friendly staff while you are there, and don't forget to tell them that Black Dog sent you!

New Dog Shopping List

(print this list for your convenience)

  • Food. You can check our webpage that says "What should I feed my dog" to get a good idea of what a quality food is. When you adopt a dog from us, you will get a small baggie of Blue Seal Dog food (that was generously donated by the company) so you can try it out and see if you like it.
  • Food and water dishes. Stainless steel are easily cleaned and they don't break. Better yet, they don't harbor yucky bacteria and are dishwasher safe.
  • ID tag. (use only your phone number and address. If your dog's name is on the tag, it makes it easier for theft). We usually put "large reward if found" on our dog's tags and our number.
  • Martingale collar. Your new dog will come with a collar, but you'll want to buy your dog a new collar, one that is a no-slip one.
  • Leash. It's always a good idea to have two leashes handy.
  • Car harness/Barrier. This helps keep the dog secure while you are driving. It's a doggy-seatbelt.
  • Crate. Choose a size that is big enough for your dog to turn around in and stretch out. Length is important.
  • Dog bed. Purchase one with a zipper cover so you can remove it for washing.
  • Brush. We recommend the Furminator. (r)
  • Dog Toothbrush with dog toothpaste
  • Nail Clippers/Trimmers.
  • Kwik Stop. This stops the bleeding if you cut the nail too short.
  • Shampoo (for dogs!)
  • Pet shower attachment. This makes dog bathing much easier and it saves your back!
  • Pet odor remover. (for accidents)
  • Toys, toys, toys! (if you want to keep your shoes) We recommend the Kong (r) to stuff with yummy goodies. This will keep your pooch busy for hours!
  • Treats, treats, treats!
