Description:***Piper is new to our rescue and is under Quarantine. She will be available for adoption shortly. Please check back***
This little peanut is as precious as they come. She is fragile and petite and a real little lady. She will need to go to a quiet home, so please don't apply if you have a household full of children or large, rowdy labs.
Piper takes a second to warm up to you, but once she does, she wants to be on your lap and giving kisses.
Piper is only 11 months old and we don't really know her history. We are working on her house training. She is curious about the world and we've only had her in our foster care for one day... but she is coming out of her shell! She is exploring more and more with confidence. She absolutely loves to just curl up next to you like a little ball and snuggle. She doesn't like her back feet to be touched, which is odd, because she is fine with us touching her front paws. She was so hungry when we first got her but she let us pet her and take her food away with no aggression at all.
She is playful on the leash when around other dogs. She would love to go to a home with another small friend. She is playful, but in a gentle way, not in a rough way like big dogs play. She initiates play by bowing down and giving a high pitched bark. It's cute!
Piper wasn't quite sure what a bone or a toy was when she first got to us. She was startled by the squeak noise the toy made, but recovered quickly. She soon realized it was a toy after I tried to get her to play, and began nibbling on the ear of it. She didn't tear it to shreds and it is still in one piece. The bone, she just carried around in her mouth until she was tired of it, then she tried to "pretend bury it" with her snout in the blanket for later.
She was flea treated at the shelter before she came to us, but it was soon discovered that she was loaded with fleas. Because of this, I have yet to introduce her to my rowdy pack of resident dogs. She is quietly resting in my (very large and cozy) laundry room for the evening, which is just as well, because it will give her time to adjust after a long drive, and plus she was just spayed so her stitches are fresh. When tomorrow comes and the advantage has had a chance to work its magic, we will introduce the dogs one by one. We'll post updates tomorrow to tell you how she did. Our dogs range in sizes from 10 pounds (which is also her weight) to 100 pounds, and everything in between. We also have cats so she'll be cat tested in a few days to come.
Piper is the epitome of sweetness. She is wholesome and innocent. I whispered in her ear that her life is just starting now and it will be all peaches and cream from here. She is one lucky dog, and we are looking for one, equally, lucky parent to match her. Pictures don't do her justice. Both her eyes and her personality sparkle.
**update 10/25*** When I woke up this morning and went to Piper's room, she squealed with excitement, she was so happy to see me. I was greeted with wet kisses and nibbles on my fingers. She just couldn't contain herself.
We have successfully introduced Piper to our rowdy pack, without incident. Everyone accepted her, and she wasn't as timid as I had predicted she'd be. She is on the submissive side, and showed my pack that instantly, but her tail was wagging and she allowed everyone to sniff and greet her one by one as we let them in. (mind you, introductions took over an hour) She particularly likes my little jack Russell and follows him everywhere.
She had a couple accidents over night, but it's to be expected, she is still a puppy at almost 11 months old, and she's in a new home and I didn't crate her last night, I left her out in the room with a bed to sleep on. She will go to the bathroom outside if you take her, but there was nobody with her last night to tell she had to go out, so things happen.
***update 10/26*** Piper has really just become part of my pack. She maneuvers in and out and under their legs successfully without incident. She actually follows my jack Russell around, tail wagging the entire time. My female terrier is enamored by her. She just sits and stares as if to say "wow, she's my size and looks almost like me!"
Piper is just wonderful. She occasionally gives a little bark, but for the most part, she is quiet and gentle. When we first get home, she squeals with excitement, she just can't contain herself. She is just sooo happy to see us. She is really smitten on my husband. She follows him around the house and jumps up on the couch with him when he watches t.v, and it's only been two days since she's been here! She really loves him.
It looks like Piper is wearing Eskimo boots. Her little legs are so thin, and then she has a puff of fur at the end of her feet so it looks like she has winter, shaggy boots on. It's adorable. She has the longest tail.
Piper already knows how to sit. My husband has been working really hard with her to get her to learn it, but she is a smart dog and wants to please him, so she picked it up quickly. She also is learning her new name, Piper, and comes now when we call her. (versus when we call one of our other dogs).
We have Piper on a very high quality food- Taste Of The Wild. She is very, very skinny, so we wanted to feed her something with extra nutrients in it and that is what we feed our dogs and so far it seems to agree with her system. We are hoping her new owners will spend the extra money and keep her on this premium, high quality food her entire life. She's worth it and she'll live longer.
I heard a couple sneezes today from her, so we are keeping a close eye for kennel cough.
Stay tuned for another update!
***update 10/28*** Piper has a really nasty case of kennel cough and she is on antibiotics. Poor girl! (this is why our rescue quarantines our dogs, can you imagine us adopting this poor girl out right when we got her into our rescue, and not only would the new family need to manage a sick little dog that they just adopted (when they should be enjoying her) but poor Piper would be in a new house, with new people, feeling all yucky and scared trying to adjust?)
We'll keep you posted on her progress. She's getting lots of snuggle time.
***update 11/4*** Piper is feeling a bit better, but still has some sniffles. However, her TRUE personality is now coming out! She is ripping and roaring all over the house, and is VERY playful with our two heeler dogs that have tons of energy themselves. Piper just doesn't want to stop playing. She gets along very well with other dogs, and her favorite thing to do is play. I am hoping to find her a home with another dog just about her size so she can play, and a fenced yard. She is a bit mouthy, and we are working on that, so I am suggesting a home without young children. She takes correction VERY well, and when you ask her to settle down in a stern voice, she listens immediately. She does settle down and loves to sit on the couch with my husband when he is there. She has really taken to him above anyone else. Piper is still very skinny, and she has put on a little weight, but has a long way to go in that department. Piper is almost completely housetrained now and she has learned the sit command. We are working on "down".
Piper is spayed, up to date on vaccinations, heart worm negative, has her rabies, has been wormed, flea treated, has had her bordetella vaccine, comes with a free first vet visit coupon, optional 30 day pet health insurance, and a goodie bag full of dog stuff and a vetting folder which tells you all about her.
